Biophysics of Signal Transduction and Protein-Protein Interactions
Probing Protein Architecture, Conformational Change and Dynamics by Solution NMR. Studies on domain-domain interactions in receptor regulation
Case Medical School, Cleveland, Ohio, USA
How do signaling events get transmitted from one protein to another? To answer this question we are looking to add a postdoctoral co-worker to our team who is interested in protein structure, protein-protein interactions and protein dynamics. {see Buck et al., (2004) J.Mol.Biol. 338, 271-285; and Tong et al., (2005) Structure 13, 7-15.}. Our systems include several small GTPases and their interacting proteins, principally the cytoplasmic domains of plexins and other receptors.
Solution NMR, amide hydrogen exchange and molecular dynamics simulation methods are the principal tools in the laboratory. NMR facilities at the Cleveland Center for Structural Biology consist of one 500MHz and four 600MHz spectrometers (two Bruker with cryoprobes) and a recently installed 800MHz. The center is currently undergoing further expansion with the installation of a 900MHz spectrometer this December, making it one of the premier NMR facilities in the US. Apart from NMR, there is scope to employ other biophysical techniques including circular dichroism and fluorescence spectroscopy as well as calorimetry.
Applicants with a background in (bio-)physical and chemical sciences are encouraged to apply, but the most promising candidates will have extensive prior experience with NMR. The Buck laboratory provides a friendly working environment with close interactions to groups in neighboring departments. The physiology & biophysics department ranks in the top 10 in terms of NIH funding - the Medical School of Case is also highly rated overall in the US (15th). Cleveland is a pleasant but affordable place to live with excellent educational, medical and cultural institutions. Starting date, project details and salary are negotiable.
