PhD Studentship in NMR Spectroscopy and Chemical Biology: School of Chemical Sciences, The University of Auckland, New Zealand

We currently have one fully funded three-year PhD studentship available, which covers tuition fees and a stipend of NZ$ 25,000 p.a. to start at any time in 2015, although preferably in the first half of 2015.

We apply solution-state NMR spectroscopy to study protein-ligand interactions, enzymology, enzyme inhibition, protein structures and protein dynamics. A particular focus is on proteins that are involved in translation, and the enzymes that modify these proteins. The techniques that we apply include both "ligand-observed" and "protein-observed" NMR. The project does not involve synthetic chemistry, detailed physical theory or programming. It offers the opportunity to learn about research at the interface between chemistry and biology, and receive training in molecular biology, enzymology and NMR spectroscopy.
