Open Position: Scientist Microwave and Terahertz Systems
Bridge12 is a privately-held startup company focusing on the development of cutting-edge, high-power microwave and terahertz sources and systems for use in scientific research such as magnetic resonance spectroscopy, communication systems and industrial applications. The company has a worldwide customer base and conducts groundbreaking research on applications of microwaves and terahertz in novel fields and has been successful in launching several innovative products based on Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grants from several federal agencies.
Job Description
As a scientist at Bridge12, you will work on multidisciplinary projects that involve all aspects of microwave/terahertz source design, development of physical prototyping, and system-level testing including testing of the final application. You will also take leadership in conceiving new products based on innovative techniques for generating high THz power in compact systems for scientific and industrial applications and discover new applications for high-power terahertz sources. You will have the opportunity to write grant proposals for innovative product development to agencies like the National Science Foundation, National Institutes of Health, Department of Energy and Department of Defense. You will have to set milestones, schedules and budgets for your projects. There could be occasional travel associated with attending research conferences, tradeshows or to visit collaborators. In this specific role you will work on the development of novel systems such as:
· Traveling wave tubes (TWT) from E-band (71-76 GHz) up to 500 GHz
· Gyrotron oscillators and amplifiers from W-Band (75-110 GHz) up to 500 GHz
· High-power, high-repetition-rate pulsed power supplies
· Dual-frequency RF/Terahertz design of innovative Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) and Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) probes for application in Dynamic Nuclear Polarization (DNP)
· High-power, low-loss transmission line systems for microwave and terahertz propagation
Required Skills & Experience
· 2-4 years of research and development of vacuum electronics based sources (e.g. TWTs, gyrotrons) and microwave engineering
· 2-4 years of experience in experimental research. Laboratory experience in working with high voltage (10-150 kV) and high magnetic fields (~10 T)
· Microwave measurement techniques including the use of a Vector Network Analyzer
· Must have experience using RF simulation tools such as CST Microwave Studio, Ansys HFSS (High Frequency Simulation Software) and Ansys Thermal and Mechanical simulation tools. Prior experience in the use of Particle-in-Cell (PIC) simulation tools is preferred
· Proficiency writing scripts using Python, Matlab and other modern scripting tools
· Experience in grant proposal writing
· Excellent verbal and written communication skills and good team work ethics
Optional Skills & Experience
· PCB design and prototyping
· Code development for electromagnetic wave propagation and beam-wave interaction
· Microfabrication techniques
Education: B.S. in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering or Physics (M.S. or Ph.D. preferred)
Benefits: Excellent benefits including Medical & Dental coverage and 401K (with match)
Visa Status: Valid US work visa. US Citizen or Permanent Resident is preferred as some of our US government contracts allow only US Citizens to perform work
