NMR Instrument Technician

Job Description Summary:
The Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) Instrument Technician will provide support for instruments within the Chemistry Department and Natural Science Division. The technician’s first priority will be the daily operation of the NMR facility, including maintenance, direct instrument operation, providing assistance to faculty/staff and qualified students in the use of the NMR. The technician will also provide support for a number of other instruments including, UV-Vis spectrophotometers, FT-IR, fluorescence, HPLC, GC, GC-MS, and other instruments.
Specific Duties:
Specifics include activities such as assuring cryogenic liquid supply, preventative maintenance, minor repairs and modifications, assuring proper safety practices and ordering supplies. Expertise and experience on the use of the high resolution solid probes with magic angle spin are essential. The technician will also provide support for a number of other instruments including, UV-Vis spectrophotometers, FT-IR, fluorescence, HPLC, GC, GC-MS, and other instruments. Support will include, assuring proper maintenance of the instrumentation (cleaning, tuning, minor repairs), arranging for external service when needed and other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
The position requires a Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering or a related field, with very good knowledge in electronics, mechanics, and two years direct experience with NMR Spectroscopy. This position requires extensive experience with desktop computer systems and instrument data systems, knowledge of component and board level electronics, as well as good communication and interpersonal skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
A Master’s degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or related field and experience with other forms of spectroscopy, chromatography, and related instrumentation is desirable.

Work Schedule:
The position is full-time (40 hrs/wk) with some flexibility in determining the specific schedule. Evening and weekend work may occasionally be needed in order to meet instructional and research objectives.
