Default Macromolecular NMR Spectroscopist

Macromolecular NMR Spectroscopist

The Structural Biophysics Laboratory, National Cancer Institute is seeking the support of a Macromolecular NMR spectroscopist who will work with and support the PIs in the Structural Biophysics Laboratory (SBL) For info on the SBL visit: [ http://go.cancer.gov/sbljobs]. The position will be hired by the SAIC-Frederick and dedicated to the SBL.

The Scientist II will work with and support principal investigators in the Structural Biophysics Laboratory (SBL) in the determination of biological macromolecular structures using high-field NMR (500-850 MHz Varian and /or Bruker systems). The Scientist II will also work with an NMR engineer to trouble shoot and resolve instrumental issues. The duties in this position include, but are not limited to: Training and assisting users in operation of sophisticated multi-dimensional macromolecular NMR experiments; Maintenance and development of experimental protocols (either as implementation of published methods or development of new methods, with opportunity to collaborate with scientists within the SBL); General instrument oversight, including scheduling and supervision of cryogen and magnet maintenance; and Cooperation with an on-site NMR engineer for trouble shooting and problem resolution. This position is located in Frederick, Maryland.

REQUIRED SKILLS: Possession of Doctoral degree from an accredited college or university appropriate to biomedical research, or eight (8) years related experience in lieu of degree. Doctoral degree with postdoctoral experience in macromolecular nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) is preferred. In addition to educational requirements, two (2) years of post doctoral education experience in NMR maintenance and application. Experience and expertise with current Varian and Bruker systems/software is essential. The ability to work in a highly interactive setting with a number of different investigators is critical.

DESIRED SKILLS: Background and expertise in the development and application of multi-dimensional biological NMR spectroscopy, both in the determination of protein and DNA structures. Proficiency in NMR engineering is also desirable. The ability to prepare and submit scientific manuscripts is highly desirable.

Interested applicants should visit the SAIC-Frederick website for more information.

Macromolecular NMR spectroscopy for the non-spectroscopist. Macromolecular NMR spectroscopy for the non-spectroscopist. FEBS J. 2011 Mar;278(5):687-703 Authors: Kwan AH, Mobli M, Gooley PR, King GF, Mackay JP NMR spectroscopy is a powerful tool for studying the structure, function and dynamics of biological macromolecules. However, non-spectroscopists often find NMR theory daunting and data interpretation nontrivial. As the first of two back-to-back reviews on NMR spectroscopy aimed at non-spectroscopists, the present review first provides an...

Macromolecular NMR spectroscopy for the non-spectroscopist: beyond macromolecular solution structure determination. FEBS J. 2011 Jan 7; Authors: Bieri M, Kwan AH, Mobli M, King GF, Mackay JP, Gooley PR A strength of NMR spectroscopy is its ability to monitor, on an atomic level, molecular changes and interactions. In this article, which is intended for non-spectroscopists, we describe major uses of NMR in protein science beyond...
