Using a decade-long sequence of annual growth rings from pine trees, scientists have then incorporated data from nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy into a study to help them correlate carbon metabolism with climate change.

Stony coral: NMR and climate resistance
http://www.spectroscopynow.com/common/images/thumbnails/15ca0b1cc7b.jpg2D nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and ultra-high-resolution 3D imaging have been used to investigate a well-known and previously well-studied stony coral of the Indo-Pacific to reveal that it precipitates minerals through a biologically driven process. The findings suggest that this particular species may be more resistant to climate change than first thought.

[U. of Ottawa NMR Facility Blog] NMR of the Christmas Tree
NMR of the Christmas Tree
One of my fondest memories as a child is the colorful lights and especially the smell of a decorated Christmas tree. The hot incandescent lights used years ago would heat up the tree evaporating the fragrant compounds in the needles producing the very memorable and wonderful smell of Christmas. Although modern artificial Christmas trees and cool LED lights have made the holiday season safer with respect to fires, they have taken much of the magic out of Christmas. Among many other compounds, it is pinene, bornyl acetate and citronellol that contribute to the...

[KPWU blog] [PyMOL] different colors of nucleic acid rings
different colors of nucleic acid rings
The image above can be drew followed by steps in*my earlier post, which shows single color of the nucleotide rings and bonds. I saw a discussion list at PyMol forum today that an user requested a way to display different colors of the nucleotide rings. Below is the example image I tested (using PDB: 2WCC). http://stats.wordpress.com/b.gif?host=kpwu.wordpress.com&blog=76132&post=711&subd=kpwu&ref=&feed=1
